Towyn Road, Pensarn, Abergele

The 12-acre site in Pensarn, near Abergele on the coast, is owned by Housing Association Carterfi Conwy and was planned for redevelopment with 131 new low-carbon affordable homes. Following the receipt of a previous Phase II investigation, REFA reviewed the available information and organised a programme of deep cable percussive boreholes to support a piled foundation design across the site, addressing poor underlying ground conditions. The investigation included a series of boreholes reaching depths of 15 to 20 meters. As part of the project, REFA also coordinated Cone Penetration Testing to assess the settlement characteristics of the site and potential settlement effects on adjacent third-party land. The data obtained from this investigation informed the specialist design for the installation of deep sewers within the site, taking into account the challenging ground conditions identified during both REFA’s investigations and previous studies.
